About
These profiles reflect and update the
Economic Areas Management Programme (ECAMP) profiles. The ECAMP was a ground-breaking research and policy support initiative (run between 2013 and 2018) which tracked and routinely assessed the market performance and long-term growth potential of over 70 business precincts across the metropolitan region.
Similar to the ECAMP, the Economic Area Profiles recognise the vital role of credible, up-to-date and accessible location intelligence in driving economic competitiveness, technological innovation and urban efficiency. This time around, the data includes a decade’s perspective rather than an annual snapshot only.
The City has advanced to the forefront of evidence-based planning by developing various purpose-built yet flexible decision-making support tools, including our
Spatial Trends Report. The new profiles will be useful for different government departments, as well as the private sector, helping entrepreneurs and corporates alike to identify both area-based opportunities and risks across industrial and commercial precincts in Cape Town.
The Economic Area Profiles form part of the baseline information used in the City’s local and district spatial planning processes. They also provide information used in monitoring and evaluation of the strategies and policies as reflected in the
Metropolitan Spatial Development Framework (MSDF) and the eight
District Spatial Development Frameworks (DSDFs).
The profiles are compiled using information from various City-owned data sources such as the General Valuation and supporting datasets, the
Development Application and Management System (DAMS) for building plans and land use applications and SARS information on employment and industry patterns. These profiles also reflect land use changes, which are enriched data generated and used for estimates in the long-term land use planning processes.
Entrepreneurs and investors, as well as developers and their consultants can use the profiles to help guide investment.
The profiles contain:
- information on capitalisation rates, vacancy rates of existing buildings, available vacant land, land use agglomeration patterns and the number and type of firms within an area, including the number of full-time employees reported on by industry, and
- a set of performance and potential indicators, where the particular area has been compared with other similar industrial or commercial areas.
disclaimer
- Profiles are under development and will be uploaded on this platform in batches.
- Updates will not be undertaken annually, but only after the release of the new General Valuation.
- Profiles consist of interpretations of the static extracts at the time of compilation, which may have changed since publication. Data gaps exist.
- Although all effort has been made to ensure accuracy of the information at the time, the responsibility still remains with the reader to triangulate the data in these profiles with other sources.
